What is Zakat and the nisab?
Zakat is a 2.5% annual due on qualifying wealth held for a full lunar year (hawl), once your net wealth exceeds the nisab — the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver. The calculator sets the nisab in NGN from live gold and silver prices; many scholars suggest the lower silver nisab so more wealth reaches those in need.
What wealth is zakatable?
- Add: cash and bank balances, gold and silver, shares and investments, receivables you expect back, and business stock.
- Subtract: immediate debts you owe.
- Excluded: your own home, personal car, and tools of your trade.
Worked example
If your net zakatable wealth (above nisab, held one lunar year) is ₦1,000,000:
- Zakat due (2.5%): ₦25,000
Scale to your own wealth — zakat is simply 2.5% of the net total above nisab.
